Aston Villa ‘Couldn’t Agree Deal’ For Jonathan David

Aston Villa experienced a wild transfer window during which they acquired additional elite players who might have a significant impact on the team in the coming years while also losing some of its most important players to Premier League sanctions for violating PSR and FFP rules. However, according to Fabrizio Romano, one player they were unable to sign was Jonathan David of Lille. The Canadian was unable to come to an agreement over a transfer to Villa Park.

One of Villa’s biggest summer exits was Douglas Luiz, who was acquired by Juventus. Ian Maatsen and Amadou Onana have been added to the team to provide exceptional depth ahead of a demanding few months that will see Champions League football return to the west Midlands for the first time in forty-one years. Even though their additions have been successful, the Villans were unable to sign David; Romano claims that at one time, it appeared as though he would be joining the team.

Jonathan David to Aston Villa: ‘Never Came Off’

In the summer, David was linked to Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur, but an agreement to move him over the English channel never came to pass.

Villa might yet use a wide attacking talent, having traded Moussa Diaby to Al-Ittihad of the Saudi Pro League.

Romano also claimed in his Daily Briefing that the player, who was born in New York, appeared to be headed to Villa in the summer, but the transaction fell through because they couldn’t come to an arrangement with him or Lille for his services. He penned:

Aston Villa 'Couldn't Agree Deal' For Jonathan David

“We can explain what happened with Jonathan David this summer, which might give some suggestions, but it is too early to forecast what might happen when his contract with Lille expires next summer.

“David was one of the guys from several organizations about whom the most inquiries were made this summer. Although it appeared as though Aston Villa would pursue him with all of their resources, the transaction fell through because they were unable to reach a consensus with the player and the team.”

Over the last four seasons, David has been a major role in the French league. He scored 13 goals in his first season, when Lille shocked everyone by winning the top division ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, and his greatest league campaign to date was 24 goals in 2022–2023.

72 league goals in 148 games is an incredible total for the French team, and that kind of consistency would be very beneficial in the Premier League, particularly at a team like Villa, where Unai Emery’s excellent coaching virtually guarantees the greatest performance out of his new additions.

Jonathan David has scored 87 goals in 189 appearances with Lille, according to GIVEMESPORT’s key statistic.

Any Premier League team would be wise to recruit the Canadian, and with Diaby leaving for Al-Ittihad earlier in the summer, there is a starting berth available on the wings.Morgan Rogers and Jaden Philogene are two excellent choices to develop at their early ages, but Leon Bailey is one star who is guaranteed to perform well and start for Emery.

David, however, is only 24 years old and, should he join, may take the Villans to the next level. With a goal-per-game ratio of about one, he could take it to the Premier League and establish himself as one of the West Midlands’ best signings.
