This week, the former player for QPR finalized his transfer to Birmingham City, moving from the Championship to League One.
In a brief message, Lyndon Dykes revealed his reasons for leaving QPR and joining Birmingham City in League One this week.
Throughout the summer, there had been rumors that the Scotland international was leaving Loftus Road, with Blackburn Rovers, Millwall, and Rangers being mentioned as possible destinations. But it was the League One team that acquired the striker in a stunning move.
Dykes joined QPR in 2020 after being acquired from Livingston for approximately £2 million. The 28-year-old led the team in scoring during the 2023–24 season with nine goals across all competitions.
The forward was announced as a Birmingham City player on Wednesday, although he was not included in the QPR squad for the matches against Plymouth Argyle last weekend and Luton Town on Tuesday night. This season, Dykes has already netted once, netting the equalizer in a 2-2 tie with Sheffield United.
After the transfer, which cost an estimated £1 million, was finalized, Dykes spoke with the Blues website to explain his decision to leave QPR for the Midlands, citing “ambition” and direction as his main draws for leaving Loftus Road.
The club has a clear vision for where it wants to go in the future, he stated. It is aspirational, which is similar to me as a player. My goal is to succeed, and I’m hoping Birmingham can help me do that.
“I’m excited to get started because there are some really good guys here. It’s an elite club, and I want to support it in moving forward and returning to its rightful place.”
Although Dykes’ departure was disappointing for the R’s, the Championship team sent him off with their best wishes as he left West London.
CEO Christian Nourry thanked Dykes in a public statement after QR confirmed the player’s exit and expressed gratitude for his time with the team. “I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to Lyndon for his outstanding work and unwavering dedication to the football team over the past four seasons, during which he has made some very important contributions,” stated Nourry.
Amazingly, he immersed himself in every facet of the football team off the field. We consider ourselves privileged to have him among our numbers, and we send him our best wishes for his upcoming enterprise.
