‘A privilege’ – Millwall’s Jake Cooper pays emotional tribute to Matija Sarkic

After Matija Sarkic unexpectedly died at the age of 26, Millwall’s Jake Cooper believes it was an honor to share a changing room with him.

Sarkic passed away unexpectedly on Saturday morning, according to the Montenegro Football Association (FSCG), and Millwall declared themselves “completely devastated.”

Sarkic, an international player for Montenegro, joined the Championship team in August 2023 after leaving Wolves. In his first season with the Lions, he made 33 appearances.

Together, they played 32 games in the previous season.

“I want to start by saying how sorry I feel for his family and his partner, Phoebe,” Cooper stated on the Millwall website. It was evident how much of a family they were, and how much Phoebe loved and supported Matija.

It was quite sad. You are aware that they now have a void in their lives, which breaks their hearts to even consider.

“As soon as he entered, he left an effect on us.

He was at ease in the changing area and immediately gave us the impression that he was one of us.

“He had to step up and demonstrate his strength of character at several points when we needed him—and he did that—during our challenging season on the field at the start of the previous one.

“It was wonderful to see him performing well, and he was really taking off near the conclusion of the previous season.

“He’s been the football team’s greatest asset. It’s been an honor to share that dressing room with him, for us lads.

In the season’s last game, a 1-0 victory at Swansea, Cooper gave away a penalty. Sarkic saved Matt Grimes’ penalty to give the Lions the victory.

Cooper continued, “That’s probably going to be my last memory of him—sharing that moment away at Swansea.”

“He was the hero in that situation because he stopped the penalty that I gave the squad.

It’s a unique occasion to remember him by.

“After that, we were all in the dressing room. How much affection he received following the match.

“I’m glad I had the opportunity to work with him for a portion of his brief life; he was a pleasure to be around.”

“This young man exuded charm and charisma and had a lot more to offer everyone.”

“It’s awful that we’re not telling him to his face while we sit here talking about him in this manner.

He showed everyone such kindness. Since he had such an impact during his year here, everyone at the club has felt it.
