Millwall Set To Sign Top-Flight Defender

The South London Press reports that Calum Scanlon, a defender for Liverpool, will join Championship team Millwall on a season-long loan.

The 19-year-old was signed by Birmingham City and then relocated to Merseyside in early 2021. Scanlon has competed at the U19, U18, and U17 levels for England. He is expected to connect with Neil Harris and his team during his first loan stint away from Anfield.

In October 2023, Scanlon made his competitive debut for Liverpool by substituting in the team’s Europa League matchup against Toulouse. In April, he inked a fresh, long-term deal with Liverpool, and he is currently hoping to play in the Championship.

With six new players joining the Millwall squad, the signing window has been rather calm for the club. One of them is Macauley Langstaff, a striker for League Two team Notts County who scored 70 goals in fewer than 100 games. Langstaff has been joined at East London by the returnee Japhet Tanganga, Daniel Kelly, Femi Azeez, and goalkeepers Lukas Jensen and Liam Roberts.

After just four months in charge last season, former manager Joe Edwards was fired, and in February 2024, former manager Harris took over as the team’s manager for the third time. Harris was able to steer the team clear of any potential relegation issues; as a result, the team ended the previous season in 13th position and just avoided relegation by a margin of nine points.

Despite their dismal start to the 2024–25 season, the Lions are still expecting to have a stronger season this year. They have only won once so far in the EFL Cup, and they have only managed one point out of a possible nine in the Championship. Even though they made it to the second round of the cup, they will not advance any farther in that tournament after losing to League One team Leyton Orient last night.

With the addition of Scanlon, they appear poised to strengthen their defence as they pursue the crucial first victory in the Championship.

It is obvious that Millwall needs more signings before the two-day transfer window closes. Scanlon may be able to give the aging backline the legs they sorely need to be a reliable team in the Championship this year.

Even though Scanlon is only 19 years old, Liverpool’s decision to offer him a new, long-term contract a few months ago indicates their confidence in the young player. The Reds definitely give their young players opportunities, as evidenced by the numerous youth academy standouts in recent years, both in local and European events. Moving away could give him crucial experience if he wishes to continue and have a distinguished career in the game. It might be wise to take a chance and relocate temporarily out of Anfield to play competitive, first-team football at a high level. Players of this age require playing time in order to develop, therefore moving to the Championship is advantageous for the child as well as for all parties involved in the transaction.
