With Homer and Key Throw, Pérez Helps Tigers Continue Bounce-Back Mindset
DETROIT — July 5, 2025 — The Detroit Tigers’ resilience was on full display Friday night as they secured another statement win, fueled by a timely home run and clutch defensive play from utility man Wenceel Pérez.
Pérez launched a solo home run in the fifth inning and later fired a crucial outfield assist to cut down a runner at the plate, helping the Tigers hold off the Minnesota Twins for a 4-3 victory at Comerica Park.
“I just want to help the team any way I can — with the bat, the glove, or my arm,” said Pérez, who continues to shine in an everyday role amid Detroit’s midseason push. “We’re fighting every night.”
His efforts were emblematic of the Tigers’ current mindset — bouncing back after tough stretches and finding ways to win in close games. Detroit has now won four of its last five contests, showing renewed energy after a disappointing early summer skid.
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch praised Pérez’s all-around impact.
“Wenceel is showing why he’s so valuable to us,” Hinch said. “That homer gave us momentum, and that throw in the seventh — it was a game-changer.”
Detroit’s bullpen locked down the final two innings, with Jason Foley earning his 14th save of the season. Starting pitcher Casey Mize gave up two runs over six innings in a steady performance.
As the Tigers continue their climb in the AL Central, players like Pérez are becoming central to their identity — gritty, reliable, and ready for the moment.
Detroit will look to keep the momentum rolling in Saturday’s game two of the series.
