What transfers every Scottish Premiership club needs as week to go window warning sounds

While some Premiership teams got off to a quick start, others took their time—too long, in the opinion of some supporters—to draw in enough new members. Of course, some movements will need additional dominoes to fall, and Matt O’Riley of Celtic could make a move that breaks records.

Rangers had an immediate impact, but they currently have a bit of a transfer bottleneck because players have to go before new ones can be brought in.Hearts have been busy navigating a campaign in Europe, but after a difficult start to the season, Steven Naismith may be realising he still has a little work to do. Jimmy Thelin is doing a good job at Aberdeen, but there’s always space for improvement, as Hibs shows.

Record Sport examines what all 12 elite teams may accomplish in the final seven days to organise everything before the next transfer window closes.

Aberdeen

Bojan Miovski’s exit has left Aberdeen without a reliable goal scorer at the top of the pitch. Although it is unclear if players like Ester Sokler, Pape Habib Gueye, and summer acquisition Peter Ambrose would be able to step up to fill the loss, Record Sport has learnt that the Dons are looking to acquire former Hibs frontman Kevin Nisbet on a Millwall loan.

Jimmy Thelin, the manager, would undoubtedly welcome another right winger. Aberdeen has also begun negotiations with Western Sydney Wanderers regarding a move for Marcus Younis, a gifted young player who is also being pursued by PSV of the Netherlands. Although they have plenty of bodies at centre back, Thelin might still want one more.

Celtic

A lot will rely on who departs by Friday of next week. Matt O’Riley is about to sign a contract with Brighton, and the rumoured £25 million in compensation would undoubtedly make it simpler to find a successor quickly. Reo Hatate is what Leicester wants, but it’s difficult to imagine Rodgers allowing two of his three primary midfield players to leave.

Matt O'Riley of Celtic

Rodgers desired a third striker prior to Adam Idah’s arrival, even though he was aware that it wouldn’t always be an experienced player. That might be possible since Man City is considering a move for Kyogo, but it’s unlikely that the Japanese will be let to depart at this point. Finding a left back to rival Greg Taylor has proven to be difficult, although the position has long been open.

Dundee

Under Tony Docherty, the Dark Blues have had a fantastic start to the season. Luke McCowan will be their top objective to hang onto as Hibs are committed to getting him out of Dens Park. Keeping him will force other midfield signings, and Scott Fraser might be a ready-made substitute.

In addition to providing an additional option in the middle of the pitch, another centre back could be helpful. Although Simon Murray has been playing well since making a comeback, Docherty would benefit from having another striker to provide some variety at the top of the pitch.

Dundee United

Jim Goodwin expressed his satisfaction with United’s summer operations following their Premiership comeback. As the Irishman prepared for the premier league, twelve players in and fifteen left. David Babunski, a former Barcelona player, and fellow countryman Kristijan Trapanovski appear to be intriguing additions.

Goodwin is now at the point where he would like to sing some more songs, but he doesn’t really need to. His desire to simply offer something different is another offensive possibility, and discussions have taken place. Apart from that, the Tangerines appear to be set until January.

Hearts

The Jambos might use one or two more players given their start to the season, but Steven Naismith hasn’t been hesitant about adding players this summer. It appears more likely that finding a replacement for Lawrence Shankland—even if he stays—might be a wise decision. Hearts depended so much on his goals the previous season that it might be wise to have a second front man to help carry the strain when Shankland isn’t scoring.

Hearts skipper Lawrence Shankland

Although supporters are already calling for improvements in some sections, the capital club is well-stocked in the majority of other areas. It has long been desired to have a true box-to-box midfielder, and the return of an established winger to assist in feeding Shankland and A.N. Other might spark the offence. It is probably going to be about moving those excess to requirements.

Hibs

There aren’t many strikers along Easter Road. Swansea’s loan return of Mykola Kuhkarevych is welcome, but David Grey requires more. Fans want a player who can attack creatively and drive from deep, and they are concerned about the midfield.

Paul Hanlon’s departure has left the left centre back looking weaker, thus adding another left back to rival Jordan Obita might be beneficial. As shown by the three attempts to convince Dundee to part with Luke McCowan, the engine room will take precedence.

Kilmarnock

At Rugby Park, defensive reinforcements are the order of the week. Even with the purchase of Jack Burroughs, another committed right back would provide protection, and four centre backs when frequently using a back three seems a little thin in terms of both options and numbers.

Though Bobby Wales and Innes Cameron appear to have surpassed Bruce Anderson in the standings despite the latter’s summer arrival from Livingston, the front looks set. Killie’s style of play is greatly influenced by Danny Armstrong, so if he were to depart, someone would need to step up, but Derek McInnes seems to be a good choice up front.

Motherwell

Since Apostolos Stamatelopoulos sustained an injury early on, replacing Theo Bair was always going to be a tall order for Stuart Kettlewell. However, he had a backup plan in Tony Watt, who rejoined the team on loan from Dundee United. Kettlewell is regrettably still looking for a forward option before the window ends in spite of this.

More depth in the midfield would be nice, and Ryan Jack, a former Rangers great, has been working out at Fir Park. It’s unclear at this point whether making a deal offer is realistic, but he would undoubtedly add expertise to the North Lanarkshire engine room.

The Rangers

More fresh faces are undoubtedly needed for Philippe Clement, but first he needs to make room for some old ones. Though it’s challenging, Ianis Hagi, Todd Cantwell, and Rabbi Matondo appear to be the most likely candidates.

A left back is now closer to the top of the list as a result of Ridvan Yilmaz’s injury and Jefte becoming more at ease elsewhere on the pitch. Since the previous season, supporters have been considering another striker as a possible replacement or option for Cyriel Dessers. If Fabrizio Romano’s most recent report is accurate, Clement might also be eager to recruit another centre back.

Ross County

The Stagges need to replace 23 of last season’s Simon Murray goals. Combining both could be a more practical option for Don Cowie, even though Ronan Hale has performed admirably since leaving Cliftonville for the other side of the Irish Sea.

Although Dingwall may use another centre back, the midfield appears well-stocked. This season, for County, it’s probably going to need a team effort rather than a single lucky charm, and keeping the back door closed might be the best course of action to avoid another playoff run or worse.

Johnstone

The signing of Aaron Cocks and Andre Raymond has helped to address the left back position, which was a serious problem at the beginning of the season. Experience in central defence, in particular, now appears to be a top emphasis. Craig Levein acknowledged that Saints had to search farther afield because the team was unable to get close to offers for two seasoned top flight players early in the summer.

Rangers have been the second-best team for far too long, and Philippe Clement hasn’t done much to improve the situation.

Up front isn’t as much of an issue as it was last year, since Saints appear to be scoring more goals this season. Although it might not be as important now that Perth has started the season, a winger who is ready to go would be nice.

St. Mirren

The Buddies, who finished fourth last year, appear in good shape. Their European journey is ended, so they won’t have to worry about trying to fit a tight squad into Thursday through Sunday’s fixtures. Robinson feels less light on numbers now that players are returning from injuries than he did a few weeks ago.

Saints will continue to try to work out a deal if an obvious upgrade becomes available and is within his budget. However, it appears that the Northern Irishman is content to use what he has as there aren’t any pressing issues. He would prefer one more, probably a forward, but more might be needed if interest in players like Caolan Boyd-Munce intensifies.
