West Virginia’s Amani Hansberry Commits To Virginia Tech…
Hansberry is close with Chester Frazier, who joined Young’s coaching staff as associate head coach on Tuesday, April 1. He joined Frazier at Illinois initially, and when the coach moved to Morgantown, he tagged along. He’s now followed Frazier again to Blacksburg.
The 6-foot-8, 240-pound forward averaged 9.8 points and a team-high 6.5 rebounds per game this year for the Mountaineers (19-13, 10-10 Big 12).
Hansberry was the team’s third-leading scorer this season while shooting 42.9 percent (114-of-266) from the field, 29.2 percent (35-of-120) from behind the arc and 75 percent (42-of-56) from the foul line. A starter in 24 of the 31 games he played, he was consistent for WVU with a team-high four double-doubles.
The Silver Spring, Md., native scored in double figures 13 times and led the Mountaineers with seven double-digit rebounding efforts. Highs included back-to-back 19-point performances in Battle 4 Atlantis in November vs. Gonzaga and Louisville, and he also had 17 points and 13 boards vs. Cincinnati in February.
As a freshman at Illinois, he averaged 2.5 points and 2.1 rebounds in 7.5 minutes per game while shooting 45.2 percent (19-of-42) from the floor. His best output of the year was an eight-point performance in the Elite Eight vs. eventual national champion UConn.
At Mount Saint Joseph High School, Hansberry was the 2023 Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year while leading his school to a 38-4 record and back-to-back MIAA conference titles. The two-time All-Metro Player of the Year by the Baltimore Sun, he was the No. 67 overall recruit out of high school and the No. 1 prospect in Maryland, per the 247Sports composite rankings.
Other Hokies players from the state of Maryland in the Mike Young era include Keve Aluma (Berlin), Darius Maddox (Bowie), Rodney Rice (Clinton) and Mekhi Long (Bryans Road).
He comes from a family of hoopers — his mother, Angela, played basketball at Howard.
