It sounds like you’re planning to propose a somewhat unconventional starting XI for Newcastle United against Southampton. What’s your lineup, and what makes it controversial? If you’d like, I can help refine your choices or discuss the potential impact of your selections.
The opening day of the 2024-25 Premier League season is almost here. Excited yet?

Newcastle United host Southampton at St James’ Park on Saturday (kick-off 3pm), and Eddie Howe has some interesting calls to make in regards to his starting XI….

Nick Pope starts – but what about the bench?

Nick Pope has consistently demonstrated his value to Newcastle United, especially after missing significant time last season due to a shoulder injury. Despite the team’s struggles in the second half against Yokohama F.Marinos at a hot and humid Japan National Stadium, Pope’s performances in pre-season have been encouraging. He has looked strong and made several top-class saves, easing concerns about a potential recurrence of his shoulder injury.
What adds an intriguing layer to the situation is who Eddie Howe will choose as Pope’s backup. Both Martin Dubravka and Odysseas Vlachodimos played a half each against Stade Brestois, making it uncertain who will secure the spot on the bench. Surprisingly, Dubravka remains at the club despite Pope’s established No.1 status and the arrival of Vlachodimos and John Ruddy, as well as Mark Gillespie receiving a one-year contract. Many expected Dubravka to move on, given the competition for the goalkeeper position at Newcastle.
