Carr announced his retirement in order to win the League Cup.
Carr’s League Cup victory, in the opinion of FLW’s Birmingham analyst Mike, makes him the best value among the candidates available for the Blues’ best cheap acquisition.
“I think there have been a few for me over the years,” Mike stated in an interview with Football League World. One of the first players I can recall that we signed on a free transfer was Steve Bruce, who was excellent for a few years.
“Damien Johnson, who we signed from Blackburn for a relatively small amount to be our club captain. Barry Ferguson and Bowyer, in my opinion, were excellent additions. Paul Robinson comes to mind; he signed a one-month contract and ended up staying for several years, but Stephen Carr is the one that stands out in my opinion the most.
“Once again, came in on a temporary basis, came out of retirement, ended up remaining for a good number of years, and was essentially a constant. For the majority of Blues supporters, undoubtedly, winning the League Cup as captain was one of the happiest days of our lives. For this reason, I believe Stephen Carr to be the best acquisition the team has ever made.”
Stephen Carr had an amazing 20-year career filled with accomplishments. The former Ireland international made his Tottenham Hotspur debut in 1993. He also had successful stints at Newcastle United and Birmingham, where he retired in 2013.
Carr, who was born in Dublin, joined the Spurs at the age of fifteen after a fruitful trial. Later, it was revealed in an interview with The Spurs Web that the right-back chose to join the Lilywhites over Arsenal, their North London rivals.
Carr gave a heartfelt explanation of why he decided to play for Spurs over Arsenal when he first joined the team: “I just felt Spurs was very homely.” Although the Mill Hill training facility wasn’t as opulent as Arsenal’s at the time, I preferred it because it felt more authentic. I stayed for twelve years in the end, and I had a great time.”
The right-back spent a happy twelve years at White Hart Lane, where in 1999 he won his first of two League Cup wins.
Carr joined Newcastle in 2004 in a reported £2 million transfer. The Irishman added to his European experience at St James’ Park by participating in the UEFA Intertoto Cup and UEFA Cup.
Carr, who was 32 years old, gave up football in 2008. The right-back retired from Newcastle earlier this year after his contract expired because he was unable to find a new team.
But the Irishman was far from finished. Carr left retirement in 2008 and signed with Birmingham, where he played for four years. He had no idea that in 2011 he would win the League Cup two times.
After more than 400 league games, Carr ultimately decided to end his football career in 2013 and retired. In addition, the right-back appeared in 44 games for the Irish Republic.
Carr would never have imagined that he would have his own mural and win a second prize after first retiring in 2008. Birmingham installed a mural in 2022 that captured the exact moment Carr raised the trophy.
