Southampton 1-1 Ipswich Town: Russell Martin post-match reaction

Russell Martin, the manager of Southampton, said he was mad and upset that Ipswich Town scored late to tie the game at St. Mary’s and earn a point.

The Saints were on their way to their first win and first points of the season until Sam Morsy scored a late equalizer. After five games, they still didn’t have a win.

“After the game, all I can say is frustration. I’m a little angry and disappointed,” Martin told the Daily Echo.

“Our first-half goal was great. We couldn’t clean up the game enough, so Ipswich had too many chances from set plays and in the second phase.

“With Cam Archer, we had a great chance and some great moments that didn’t work out.”

“But a lot of what they did I really liked.”The guys played great at the start of the second half, in my opinion.

“I thought the second half was great, but you need to score the second goal. If you don’t, you need to defend the set play well, which shouldn’t happen.”

“It was a really poor set-piece to give away. It’s about game management and there’s too much worry in the team.

“I’m sure I’ll be so happy about a lot of it (when I watch it back). I’m angry right now as you can see. Conceding on 96 minutes, of course, you’re going to be furious and not very happy about it.

“We are getting better and better every game. I really feel that. We have to continue growing and getting better.

“It’s so tight down there that the league will be so tight for a long, long time. We just need to keep working and getting better, but make sure we turn it into wins.”
