Chris Sutton thinks what Southampton boss Russell Martin said recently is ‘plainly wrong’

Russell Martin, the manager of Southampton, believes that possession is the key to victory and has a very specific style of play for his teams.

Russell Martin has demonstrated success with this strategy, having gone from his first League One management position at MK Dons to the Premier League with Southampton in just five years.

But every step forward has also brought more attention and scrutiny, and Martin is finding out the hard way that in the Premier League, there is nowhere to go.

This is particularly true for teams that have lost their opening three games in the tournament, as Southampton has done. Martin addressed some of the criticism directed at his strategies following Southampton’s most recent 3-1 loss to Brentford.

Chris Sutto thinks Southampton Russell Martin’s assertion about Britain is untrue.

Throughout his management career, Martin has had to contend with charges of inexperience and lack of a backup plan. Most recently, he asserted that the perception of his style of play stems only from the fact that he is a young British manager.

Former player turned analyst When questioned about these remarks, Chris Sutton, who co-hosts the podcast It’s All Kicking out, started out by endorsing Russell Martin as a coach, saying, “First of all, I’ve got a lot of admiration for Russell Martin.” He appeals to me.

“He did a great job, in my opinion, of moving Southampton up last season. In fact, I believe that when McCarthy joined the squad at the conclusion of the campaign and Bazunu was hurt, they somewhat changed their play style and were more direct.

“I believe that having principles of play is essential, and I appreciate Russell’s commitment to upholding them.”
