Rarely-seen QPR man enduring disrupted start to League One loan after ‘old injury’ returns

In an attempt to offer the talented midfield player Taylor Richards additional playing time elsewhere, QPR sent him out on loan during the summer transfer window.

Richards joined QPR in the summer of 2022 after first joining on loan from Brighton. The following year, the transfer became permanent.

The midfielder had a successful early career while playing for the Seagulls and Manchester City. While a stint at Birmingham City was fruitless, he made waves when he came at Loftus Road in 2020–21 after starring in a League One loan spell with Doncaster Rovers.

However, Richards’s plans haven’t quite worked out in West London. Due to injuries, he has only made 21 appearances for the team, which has hampered his development.

Richards is eager to remind everyone that he is still the same prospect who came with a lot of promise. During the summer transfer window, QPR approved a loan deal for the 23-year-old from Cambridge United in an attempt to do this.

Richards’ current loan

Regrettably, a well-known problem has emerged in the Abbey Stadium’s early years. Richards has seen a “old injury” surface and has been sidelined after starting the opening two League One games off the bench in an attempt to ease him in.

The QPR loan player has missed the previous two games, although it was unclear how long he would be sidelined.

It will have been distressing for the player and his parent club to hear Garry Monk clarify that it is a return of a preexisting condition, especially after such hardships over the last 18 months or so.

Although Richards’ exact comeback date is still unknown, considering his past problems, it is unlikely that he will be rushed back into action, even though the midfielder is determined to receive the assistance he needs to reach his full potential.

The next season

Naturally, the 2024–2025 season is still very much in its early stages, and Richards is actually contracted to Cambridge United for the entire season. It is thus hoped that he still has plenty of time to heal, rejoin the squad, and earn some self-assurance in his abilities.

When evaluating the performance of this season, that will be crucial. Richards has struggled since moving to QPR permanently, but he still has a chance to establish himself at Loftus Road.

But maintaining fitness is crucial, therefore the midfield player will suffer if a new problem arises.

The next report on Richards from Cambridge manager Monk will be closely watched to determine when he can return to play with the League One team.
