Three Celtic youths amaze McAvennie, saying, “I’m really impressed.”
With Luke McCowan joining the team and Paulo Bernardo’s outstanding performance in Sunday’s 3-0 Old Firm victory, Arne Engels is not a sure starter at Celtic.
Frank McAvennie, an ex-Celtic striker, revealed exclusively to Football Insider that the 20-year-old central midfielder may need a few weeks to adjust to Brendan Rodgers’ preferred style of play, given that McGowan, 26, and Bernardo, 22, are now ahead of him.
Engels arrived to Celtic late on August 30, the day of the transfer deadline, for a club-record £11 million from German team Augsburg.
Over the summer, McCowan and Bernardo both made their permanent transfers to Celtic Park. Bernardo had previously played on loan in Glasgow for Portuguese powerhouse Benfica.
Arne Engels’ arrival has loaded the midfield for Celtic.
During his two years in Augsburg, Engels made 53 appearances, 34 of which were starts. He was mostly a center midfielder but could also play right in front of the back four.
After Matt O’Riley made a big-money transfer to Brighton, Celtic had plenty of choices in the middle of the park, with eight first-team players vying for three starting berths.
“On Sunday, the boys were biting at everyone’s feet. They should have been on the practice field, snapping at heels whenever someone grabbed the ball.
Engles has to resolve the matter within a few weeks in order to be considered for this team.
“When McGowan first went on, you should have seen his face—it looked like he had won the lotto. I also felt very happy for him.
It was wonderful to realize that he is a man of Celtic descent from a large family.
Even if he only plays a little role, he and Bernardo give us guys who can enter the game without throwing off the flow.
“I’m really impressed with the fighters Brendan has assembled. Hopefully, we can make an impression on the European scene and reclaim that fortress at Celtic Park.”
