QPR star meets ‘fantastic’ hype with ‘smart’ double save against £50m Premier League duo

A QPR star’s “smart” double save against a £50 million Premier League combination lives up to the “fantastic” expectations.

The R’s played a friendly match on Thursday afternoon against Brentford, their local rivals.

Goalkeeper Joe Walsh of QPR may be a future star as he once again showed his mettle in a friendly match played behind closed doors on Thursday vs Brentford.

In a goalless draw with the Bees, the 22-year-old was used in between the sticks by Marti Cifuentes, maintaining a clean sheet against the elite team. Following a significant few months in which he made his Championship debut on the last day of the previous season, Walsh turned in a stunning performance.

The 2021 R’s player had a memorable appearance in last week’s Carabao Cup encounter against Luton Town. In the second half, Walsh made an outstanding save to thwart a dangerous header from Carlton Morris. Later, in the shootout, Walsh stopped the game-winning penalty.

Walsh was praised as “fantastic” by Cifuentes following the game, and he was at it again against Brentford. Although the friendly matchup was private, both teams released their own match reports, which were quite complimentary of Walsh.

After just 12 minutes, the QPR report mentioned a “smart double stop” against Kevin Schade, a player worth £22 million, and Fabio Carvalho, a summer transfer for £28 million. The ‘well blocked’ save was also complimented in the Brentford piece.

Following the interval, Walsh made a “significant improvised stop” to deflect a Ryan Trevitt shot over the crossbar. The goalie also stopped a potentially deadly Ashley Hay opportunity with the tiniest touch on the ball; the referee determined that Walsh had the crucial contact, despite the Bees’ belief that they should have been given a penalty.

Walsh joined Loftus Road from Gillingham in January 2021, and following his complete debut against Coventry City, he extended his contract this summer. Walsh declared when he signed a new contract, “I am really looking forward to the future.”

“I’ve put in a lot of effort and developed as a goalie over the previous three and a half years. Right now, all I want to do is continuing getting better and showcasing my abilities to the club members.
