The announcement that Leeds United had secured a new contract for star attacker Wilfried Gnonto put the finishing touches on a respectable transfer window.
Eight players were acquired by Leeds United in the summer transfer window. They signed contracts to add Ao Tanaka and Isaac Schmidt, strengthening their midfield and full-back options, respectively, to round up their business.
The announcement on Saturday morning that the Whites had signed Gnonto to a new four-year contract, however, topped these eight transactions.
Gnonto figures support the agreement
In early September 2022, Forward Gnonto made landfall at Elland Road. He joined Leeds United for an estimated £3.8 million from FC Zurich, bringing with him a top prospect for the future as well as the present.
Throughout his debut campaign with the Whites, the Italian international’s talent was clear. He made 24 appearances in the Premier League that season, tallying two goals and dishing out four assists.
After Leeds’ 2023–24 Championship campaign, Gnonto realised his potential and fulfilled his promise, and relegation followed. The charming Gnonto recorded two assists and eight goals in 36 Championship games.
He has played in all four games this season, scoring one goal, which came in the chaotic opening-day 3-3 draw against Portsmouth.
Gnonto was not assigned to a left-wing position but was allowed more freedom to wander around during Wednesday’s match against Sheffield. The young Italian demonstrated his potential as a menace to opposing defences in that match.
