EXCLUSIVE NEWS: Ex-Portsmouth and Millwall man’s Cardiff contract terminated following summer court conviction

After verbally abusing a police officer about homophobia while being arrested for drunk driving, a former Pompey player has lost his club.

On transfer deadline day, Mahlon Romeo left Cardiff voluntarily after being excluded from the starting lineup.

The right-back entered a guilty plea to driving over the legal alcohol limit in February when he appeared at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court in May. In addition, he acknowledged having abused a police officer, which was a public order crime.

Romeo received fines of £3,317 for violating the public order and £4,423 for driving while intoxicated. He also faced a 14-month driving restriction.

The former Millwall defender later expressed regret for his remarks to the police officer and apologised for his behaviour. He hasn’t played for the Bluebirds since.

The 28-year-old is now free to pursue a new chapter in his life after his contract was cancelled.

Romeo was released by Millwall in June 2022, and he signed with Cardiff. In two seasons, he made 51 appearances for the Championship team.

The attacking full-back had previously fallen out of favour at The Den and spent the 2021–22 season on loan at Pompey.

Romeo was signed by Danny Cowley and played 41 games for the Blues. However, despite having a strong first half of the season, Romeo was occasionally left off the roster in favour of fellow loanee Hayden Carter.

At right-back, Carter of Blackburn did start the remaining six games for Cowley’s team, who finished a disappointing 10th in League One.

Romeo relocated to Cardiff permanently that summer, but he didn’t play for the Bluebirds during the 2024–25 season or the preseason after May’s conviction.
