An artist from Southampton has defied sports rivalry by slyly putting up a Saints mosaic at the Portsmouth sports Club’s stadium.

The mosaic’s 51-year-old creator, Will Rosie, told the Echo that the purpose of the act was to highlight the rivalry’s lighter and more humorous aspects.

He stated: “I had been thinking about it for a while, and I made sure I did it on a weekday morning when there wasn’t a match on, because I developed the ‘Mr. Saints’ approximately a year ago.

“I’ve had some amusing banter with some Pompey fans and great comments from Saints supporters.

“I was approached by some club employees outside Fratton Park, but I believe they soon realized it was a lighthearted joke and asked me to take it down. Nevertheless, I took a photo before I left, which I intend to sell later this year.”

Will, often referred to as “Mr Mosaic,” has gained notoriety for creating a variety of mosaics across the city, with Mr. Men figures appearing in unexpected locations including Portswood Police Station, the Itchen Bridge, and Southampton General Hospital.

“It’s all positive and a little fun at the end of the day, and the feedback has always been great,” he stated.

“I’m glad the Saints mosaic has been received with the spirit that was intended, even though it was a little cheeky.”

He said, “As I mentioned, I’ll soon be looking to sell prints of the mosaic and I think it would make a great birthday and Christmas present, especially for many dads who are probably getting Lynx Africa and the same bottle of whisky.”

Will contributed to the design of many lighthouses that were positioned throughout the city center over the summer in addition to the mosaics.

On September 20, Southampton International Boat Show will have an auction to benefit Southampton Children’s Hospital.
