28-year-old set to bid farewell to Sheffield Wednesday this summer

Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson is ready to depart Hillsborough in favour of a fresh challenge, The Star has learned.

Sheffield Wednesday have had shot-stopper Dawson on the books since taking him into their academy ranks in the summer of 2012

Dawson has been a regular in the first-team picture in recent years, raising his appearance total for the club to 129. In that time, he’s maintained a total of 47 clean sheets, however he lost his starting berth to James Beadle earlier this year.

Now, with his term winding down, the 28-year-old is likely to move on from the Owls.

As reported by The Star, Dawson is prepared to turn down a new agreement in favour of a fresh challenge. He is anticipated to have plenty of choices elsewhere as he explores pastures new ahead of next season.

A fresh chapter awaits

If he is to proceed into free agency, Dawson should have a solid selection of alternatives about his future move.

He’s had experience in the Championship and League One, impressing at both levels. He’d be a fantastic addition for a club towards the top of the third-tier but is surely capable of pushing for a starting berth at one of Wednesday’s division opponents too.

The ‘keeper earned a nice run in the side upon Danny Rohl’s arrival last season, gaining the starting job back from loan player Devis Vasquez.

However, Beadle’s arrival forced him back to the bench and with new goalkeeper additions expected this summer, Dawson presumably would have been relegated down the pecking order again ahead of next season.

The goalkeeper department

Former loan ace Beadle has been extensively linked with a return to Sheffield Wednesday and there appears poised to be another arrival in between the sticks.

It has been said that Ben Hamer will be coming on a free transfer too, however his arrival will not hinder the Owls’ Beadle pursuit with conversations still underway over a reunion.

If those two join, it would leave Rohl with Beadle, Hamer and starlet Pierce Charles to chose from in goal. That sets poised to be a solid goalkeeping department with a decent combination of experience and promising young.

With that considered, it seems a Dawson departure.
