Former Barnsley and Swindon Town boss ‘in the frame’ for role at Carlisle United

Former Barnsley boss David Flitcroft is reportedly in the frame to become Carlisle United’s new sporting director.

Championship A familiar face at Oakwell, Flitcroft acted as Keith Hill’s assistant before moving into the main role. He steered the Reds to safety in 2013, only to lose his job after an underwhelming start to the campaign that followed.

After stints in charge of Bury, Swindon Town and Mansfield Town, the 50-year-old stepped away from the manager limelight to reunite with Hill at Bolton Wanderers. After a period as Trotters assistant, he departed and returned to football for a spell as director of football at Port Vale.

According to reporter Alan Nixon on his Patreon page, Carlisle are keen to appoint a sporting director as well as a new manager. Flitcroft is though to be in the frame, six months on from his Port Vale exit.

The Cumbrians recently axed Paul Simpson, following relegation to League Two and a tough start to life back in the fourth tier. The team are currently under the control of caretakers and fell to a 2-1 defeat to Bradford City at the weekend 

Flitcroft had mixed fortunes at Port Vale and fan opinion turned against him towards the end of his time at the club. A month before his departure, an open letter defending Flitcroft was published by the club’s chair Carol Shanahan.

According to reports, former Barnsley manager David Flitcroft is a candidate to take over as Carlisle United’s next sports director.

Title Flitcroft, a well-known figure at Oakwell, served as Keith Hill’s assistant prior to taking on the lead role. After leading the Reds to safety in 2013, he lost his job due to a lackluster start to the following year.

In order to rejoin Hill at Bolton Wanderers, the 50-year-old left the manager spotlight after stints in command of Bury, Swindon Town, and Mansfield Town. He served as Trotters assistant for a while before leaving to take a position as Port Vale’s director of football.

Reporter Alan Nixon claims on his Patreon page that Carlisle is eager to name a new manager and sports director. It is believed that Flitcroft is still under consideration, six months after leaving Port Vale.

Paul Simpson was recently fired by the Cumbrians after the team was demoted to League Two and had a difficult reintegration into the fourth division. The squad, which is presently led by caretakers, lost 2-1 at Bradford City over the weekend.

At Port Vale, Flitcroft saw mixed results, and as his tenure came to a close, the club’s supporters began to turn against him. Carol Shanahan, the head of the club, sent an open letter supporting Flitcroft one month prior to his departure.
