In 2023–24, the Saints achieved an unexpected comeback to the English Premier League by defeating Leeds United in the play-off final.

After their comeback, Southampton has struggled to find their form, and after three games, they are presently ranked 19th in the Premier League table.

The South Coast team has dropped its first three games, managed just one goal, and given up five.

This is the case even though Russell Martin had a lot of support during the summer transfer window of 2024.

During the most recent transfer window, Southampton signed a whopping 19 new players in an attempt to stave off relegation.

The largest transaction of the window was the permanent move of Taylor Harwood-Bellis, although Aaron Ramsdale was added by Southampton later on to try to shore up what has been a fragile backline thus far.

However, Martin now has an oversized team and won’t be able to offer everyone enough playing time to make them all happy because of all the new players who have joined St Mary’s.
